About Us

Located in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains The Bicycle School offers a wide variety of training for professionals and anyone wanting to enhance their knowledge of the bicycle.

East Tennessee is a long overlooked riding destination for road, mountain, gravel and greenway enthusiasts. We love the riding offered in East Tennessee and hope students get a chance to see what this hidden cycling gem has to offer.

The Bicycle School provides quality training to IBD’s and Cyclists. We offer group pricing for classes held at our Maryville facility. We can also provide in shop custom classes and staff training in all areas of bicycle retail at your location.

Training your staff can be expensive and time consuming so we offer value priced specific classes to IBD’s. We guide your staff through the skills needed to provide a best in class experience for your customers. Check out the “Classes” page for details of the courses we currently offer. Contact us to discuss how we can help your staff provide the best in class service your customers expect.

Professional instruction can also be beneficial for cycling enthusiasts wanting to be more independent and confident as they increase their miles and broaden their adventures.

All of the classes at our Maryville facility are open to everyone. There are some minimum physical requirements that students will need to meet for our mechanic training. This info is located on the “Classes” page of our website.

Tim has been riding and working on bikes for as long as anyone can remember. He’s been an active member of the Southeastern cycling community since the mid 1980’s. He’s been a chief mechanic at numerous events including the Tour De Smokies and CEO Challenge for Blackberry Farm. He’s provided SAG support for The Tour De Cure, Cherohala Challenge, Dancing Bear Bike Bash, Tour De Blount and many other events and races. As manager of Cycology Bicycles from 2005 to 2016 he helped grow the business to a well-respected full service bicycle retailer. Under his guidance Cycology Bicycles grew from a small 800 square foot store to the full service 5000 square foot bike shop it is today. In 2006 he started the areas first designated professional bicycle-fitting studio and quickly grew it to a premier accredited fit studio. Cycology Bicycles is named an NBDA Top 100 bicycle dealer.

When he’s not working he can be found exploring remote gravel roads by bike or chasing smallmouth in his micro skiff with fly rod in hand.

Founder / Owner

Sarah’s passion for cycling began in the 1990’s. Her almost 20 year career as a mechanic began in Rockford, Il in 1998 and has taken her all around the country, finally landing at Cycology Bicycles in Maryville, TN in 2015. She has been an event mechanic at the Ride Across Indiana and worked as a race mechanic for several years for men’s teams competing in the Little 500. In addition to her mechanic experience, she is an avid cyclist and racer competing in road, track, mountain, and Cyclocross events. Her cycling also includes racing, and winning, the Little 500 in Bloomington, IN. Her passion for that event led to years of coaching a successful women’s team. Aside from competition, Sarah has completed several mountain bike tours and spends countless hours pedaling on any back road she can find.

In starting out as the only female bike mechanic in her town, she has always strived to empower more women to learn about their bikes and have the confidence to push their skill set. She has organized and led women’s-only repair clinics teaching women how to fix real-world problems out on the road and encourage them to ride alone with confidence.

Sarah is excited to share her passion for cycling and help beginner and experienced mechanics hone their skills and learn new ones!

Growing up on a small Indiana farm, Josh learned his mechanical skills at an early age following his Grandpa’s lead. His first job in the bike world started when he was a young teenager as a race mechanic—his own. Traveling the Midwest, racing every weekend was tough on his bike and he learned quickly how to keep it tip-top. Fast-forward about 25 years and he now has nearly as many years of formal bike shop experience. Starting as a bike builder in a small town bike shop, and culminating as the service manager of a NBDA top ten bike shop, he’s seen -and fixed- just about everything. Being an instructor in countless maintenance and repair classes, and training dozens of new and seasoned employees, Josh has honed his skills teaching anyone from the most novice cyclist to the seasoned mechanic veteran. Josh is an avid cyclist, competing in mountain bike, BMX, road, Cyclocross, track, a few years as a professional downhiller, enjoys touring, and really just likes riding casually so he can listen to people talk.
